Liquor baron Vijay Mallya who is under scrutiny for defaulting on loans worth Rs. 9000 crore from various Indian banks, has been living in a $15 million mansion in England’s Hertfordshire county, The Sunday Times reported.

The mansion was bought from the father of the Formula One champion Lewis Hamilton, by a company with offshore links, the newspaper added.

This practice of using offshore companies for buying properties in the UK has increasingly come under inquiry as it allows the real owner to evade taxes. Collectively, such companies hold nearly $245 billion of British property, much of it in London and the Home Counties.
