Now if you are from Mumbai, so here is good news for you, now you can park your car in front of your home in night and for that you need to pay Rs 1,800 to BMC. This ruling was passed by Shiv Sena and BJP according to which public will be free to park their car in roads, but they need to pay some amount of money. It was a U-turn after the same had been kept pending for over a year. The rates of BMC parking lots are classified into three different categories and it is expected that rates will go up by 300% for cars and 650% for two-wheelers.
However the civic body has introduced hefty charges ie. Rs 30 per night, which will be to Rs 1,800 for whole month for night parking on roads by housing society residents. First pilot project will be launched for three months and after that the new policy with revised rates will be implemented, this policy will be for both kinds of parking in a ward likely in south Mumbai, proves to be successful. According to Sunil Prabhu, former Mayor from Shiv Sena (Now MLA), “We will get an idea of the reaction of people in pilot project and if the people will object to the policy than we can make few changes before the implementation of project in whole city” the more he added that he policy should be implemented across the city and suburbs only if it proves to be a success during the trial.
On Friday, Mayor Snehal Ambekar, didn’t allow any discussion on the policy and it is expected that the project is half completed, particularly charging for night parking outside housing societies. It is expected that the policy may not increase the revenue, but it will encourage use of public transport and it will lead the city towards the low pollution. The city has been divided into three category, which is A, B and C largely on footfalls and differentiated parking rates introduced with the maximum for the most crowded places. For example: In Category A, you need to pay Rs 60 per hour to park a car at Kala Ghoda; in Category C, you need to pay only Rs 20 near the Shoppers Stop on Ghatkopar-Mahul road. An in addition the parking has been made free at Girgaum and Juhu chowpatty and Gateway to boost tourism however the parking rates will fall on Sunday and public holidays.
